How Do I Scrap My Car?
To scrap your car, you will need to follow this process:
- If you want to keep the registration number, you will need to take it off the vehicle
- Find an authorised treatment facility (ATF) where your vehicle can be scrapped
- Give the ATF your vehicle log book (V5C), ensuring you keep the yellow slip from it (V5C/3.)
- Inform the DVLA that you have taken your vehicle to an ATF
How Do I Prove My Identity?
The Scrap Metal Dealers Act requires you to confirm your identity when you hand over your car in order for it to be scrapped. An in date photo-card driving license is all that you will need, this ensures that the scrap dealer can confirm your full name, date of birth and residential address. If for some reason you don’t have a photo-card driving license, you can produce another form of ID; doing so you will also need to produce another form of ID which proves your address.
The accepted forms of photo ID are:
- Valid UK Passport
- Valid UK biometric immigration document
- A valid passport issued by a European Economic Area state
The accepted proof of address:
- A building or bank society statement
- A credit or debit statement
- A utility bill (gas, electric, water) mobile phone bills will not be accepted
- A council tax statement or demand letter
What If My Cars Not in Very Good Condition?
Regardless of the condition of your car, it can still be scrapped. Cars which have failed their MOT will still appeal to scrapyards. What Do I Have to Do to Prepare for My Scrap Car Collection?
There isn’t much preparation needed when it comes to scrapping your car, key things such as ensuring your vehicle is accessible, making sure you have all the documentation for the, car such as the V5 logbook, and a valid form of ID is all you will need to do in order to scrap your car.
